Things to carry while winter trek

The temperature of Kedarkantha in winter is -2 to 12 degree Celsius.
  • Trekking bag of around 16 meters minimum length so that you can carry all your essentials inside the bag. It should have different compartments so that you don’t find any kind of difficulty while searching for any of your stuff.
  • Raincoats/poncho for you as well as for your bag because rains in hilly areas are always unpredictable as well as snowfall.
  • A warm layer: You should have 2 to 3 warm layered hiking jackets that protect you from snow, rain, wind, and cold. You should also carry warm and thermal trekking trousers with different pockets to carry your go-to-go essentials like wipes, sanitizers, etc.
Tip: instead of buying hiking jackets you can borrow them from your guide because they come very expensive if you have around 12000-10000 rupees, but you can buy them at around 600-800 rupees.
  • Toilet: You should carry your toilet paper, body wash, ries toothpaste, toothbrush, wipes, moisturizer, facewash, etc. but carry them in small bottles so that they do not take up much space in your bag.
  • Footwear: In hilly and slippery areas like this you must not forget to carry hiking shoes with the best grip and even protects your feet from shivering cold. You should carry warm woolen socks to give your feet much warmth to climb that height.
  • Neck and head protection: It will be best if you carry monkey or woolen caps that cover your complete head, ears, nose and even your neck as well. For better protection, you must carry a woolen balaclava. You should also carry a sun cap, snow glasses, and sunglasses.
  • Lights and torches: You should carry a headlamp as well as a hand torch with broad brightness to get proper visibility at night.
  • Pair of gloves: Gloves with fur inside and leather outside to lock the warmth inside the gloves to protect your hands from getting numb.
  • Inners: You should carry more inners with you because you’ll not get enough sunlight and warmth to dry them daily. You should also carry dry-fit t-shirts with quick dry technology that absorbs your sweat and gets dry quickly.
  • Basic medicines: For emergencies, you should have some basic medicines like a balm, nose spray, common cold tablets, body pain, and fever tablets, sprain spray, Dettol, handiplast, glucose ORS to hydrate yourself, and other basic first aid components required according to your health issues
  • Digital backups: You have to charge all your digital backups at the base camp only before starting the trekking because you’ll not get any kind of electricity or power facility on the way. So, you need to carry power banks with greater backup power that helps you keep going.
  • Important documents: Medical disclaimer signed by MBBS or certified doctor, original and printed copies of your id proofs like Aadhar card, PAN card or driving license, passport size photos

Things to carry in other seasons

Even in other seasons, Kedarkantha carries quite a bit of snow – especially the higher campsites towards the summit. You will get to see Rhododendrons and freshly exposed grasslands blooming.

So, you’ll need to carry a few woolen clothes and jackets but not the heavy jackets that you carry in winter. Microfiber towels and clothes that absorb water and get dry quickly to be carried during the monsoon seasons. The remaining listed items will be as similar as mentioned

Tips:

Make full use of the outermost pockets of your backpacks

Make use of all the zips in your trek pants jackets
