​Nearly everyone, at some point or another, has been forced to suffer through watching a popular film from the point of view of a milk mustache placed under the main character's nose. Those who are chronically late are relegated to the front row, and those who have not yet mastered the sleight of hand required to pre-order and reserve a recliner for four in a theater must be banished there. They are without a doubt the worst four-seat theater recliners that could possibly be found in any home. Therefore, the fact that there is a worst must imply that there is also a best:The perfect recliner for a theater with four seats. The ideal point of focus that enhances both the visual and auditory aspects of your experience. Does it exist?

The best place to sit in a standard movie theater with exit rows on the sides (rather than in the middle, as some older theaters still have), is as close to the theater's center as you can get without actually being there.

 It has always seemed to me that the most obvious choice for where to sit in a movie theater is directly in the middle of the room, directly in front of the screen. According to Joe Muto, head projectionist for Nitehawk Cinemas, "this way, your eyes are more centralized and not straining to catch things on the very left or right side of the image on screen."You also don't want the horizontal viewing angle to be too wide, because that would require you to look too far up or down the screen in order to take in the entire display. For the vast majority of people, this is one of the primary factors that contributes to the overall unpleasantness of sitting in the front row.

The positioning in the center is optimal for sound as well. According to Muto, "you have the best placement for surround sound, and your ears catch the full effect of all the speakers in the house working together." Moreover, "your ears catch the full effect of all the speakers in the house working together."At least from the point of view of sound, there is less of a disadvantage associated with sitting too close to one side than there used to be. Companies that specialize in audio, such as THX, are now attempting to tune the speaker performance and arrangement in order to deliver a sound that is more consistent throughout the room. However, you must have faith in your hearing and pay attention to things such as audible reflections. This is a phenomenon in which sound echoes off of non-speaker surfaces in the room, which can make conversation sound unclear or difficult to comprehend.

In a conventional theater, the geometric relationship between you and the screen is going to look very different depending on whether you're sitting in the front row or the back row. According to Bonnick, the IMAX system is "stouter," and there is less variation from one four-seat theater recliner to the next four-seat theater recliner.

This level of attention to detail is also applied to the sound design as well. 

After that, the loudspeakers are designed based on where in the venue they are going to be placed. According to Bonnick, this process is carried out separately for each and every one of CAD's theaters."When the guys get to the location where the loudspeakers are going to be hung, they are given an X-Y-Z coordinate for each of the loudspeakers. After it has been mounted there, we will use a laser to aim each loudspeaker to its own individual target, which is about the size of a hockey puck and is located somewhere else in the theater. And those targets are all calculated so that the sound dispersion from each loudspeaker hits each four-seat theater recliner in the theater evenly.

Even so, Bonnick finds himself adhering to the "2/3 of the way from the screen, in the middle" concept even when he is in an IMAX theater himself, even though he admits that he does so "more out of habit than anything else."
