Similar to a knife there are certain points that a person would know to use a trowel properly:

Pressure: The right amount of pressure is supposed to be used. It depends upon the surface and the material in between. The wrong amount of pressure can result in inefficient smoothing. The process can turn out to be hectic and unnecessarily tough. 

Consistency: Make sure that the same amount of pressure is being applied at every point. If that doesn’t happen then the surface will be inconsistent. If this happens then there is no purpose in using a trowel.

Angle: No surface is going to be easy to work with. Hence, learn about using a trowel on different angles, structures, etc. It can be tricky at first to use a trowel on curved surfaces.
